This design decision Saved the Rainy wedding Day
Thanks to this idea, I was able to turn the day that could have been a rainy mess to a magical one that felt uniquely theirs.
what does a rainy wedding day mean
When it comes to weddings, people love to say that rain on your day is good luck for your marriage. But for this couple at Hummingbird House, that is not what you wanted to hear when you had dreamed of exchanging vows in the venue’s breathtaking garden ceremony space. It wasn’t exactly the luck they had hoped for their day; but we pulled off a rain plan ceremony full of love, community, and creativity that made the day seem to happen just as it was meant to be.
The bride had long envisioned walking through the lush gardens of Hummingbird House, surrounded by blooms and greenery. Their florist had even designed two installations - one floral arch for the beginning of the aisle and another framing the altar. By the time the couple had to make the call, it was too late to uninstall and move the arches to the greenhouse where the ceremony was moved. The couple took the news with stride and were content with letting the day happen as it did, doing their best to move on from the disappointment of having a bare altar in the greenhouse.
What to do if it rains on your wedding day
Have a rain plan! Luckily, the venue already has chairs setup in the on-site greenhouse, a beautiful but simple space, anchored only by a plain iron arch. While providing good bones, it didn’t reflect the couple’s original vision — and the thought of losing those carefully planned florals was a heartbreak.
I knew there were still a few hours before guests would arrive. The wedding party, dressed and buzzing with anticipation, had already gathered in the reception area. Remembering the buckets of extra florals leftover from the reception bouquets — I had an idea to let give these otherwise unused flowers an important job.
With a handful of willing bridesmaids and groomsmen, we carried the flowers to the greenhouse and got to work. We began weaving stems directly into the iron arch, using its slim poles to hold them in place. Every stem tucked in felt like a small act of love, and like we all could be well suited for a side job as a florist. We really enjoyed doing this knowing that it would be a small act that would create a huge smile for the couple right as they walk down the aisle. Petals that couldn’t be secured were gently plucked and scattered, transforming the center of the altar into a stage of color.
What brings good luck on your wedding day?
The people and the love. By the time the ceremony began, the once-plain arch had blossomed into something magical. The couple walked into the greenhouse expecting bare iron — but instead, they were met with a vibrant floral display created not only for them, but by their closest friends.
The look on the bride’s face said it all. What had been a disappointing turn of weather became an unforgettable memory. The rain no longer felt like a setback — it was part of the story, one that made the day uniquely theirs. Julian and Michelle said, “I do” under the sound of raindrops pattering on the glass ceiling of the greenhouse and in front of the floral arch made with so much love.
Weddings remind us that love isn’t about everything going according to plan. It’s about embracing what comes, finding beauty in the unexpected, getting creative with solutions and celebrating the people who make it possible. At Hummingbird House, the rain didn’t stop this couple from having their dream ceremony. In fact, it created an even sweeter moment — one that showed that, with a little creativity and a lot of love, the day will always feel exactly as it should.
